Referential density in discourse and syntactic typology

چکیده

Narrative production experiments reveal systematic crosslinguistic differences in the preferred ratio of overt to possible argumental NPs (called here the REFERENTIAL DENSITY value) between three pro-drop languages of the Himalayas (Belhare, Maithili, Nepali). These differences can be accounted for by the degree to which morphosyntactic features of NPs, especially case features, are relevant for syntactic processing. This degree is the higher the more there are pivots or controllers of syntactic rules (e.g. verb agreement) that are defined not only on the basis of a thematic role hierarchy but also by a case feature (as when, e.g., verb agreement is blocked by quirky case on the thematically highest argument).

The interplay between referential processing and local syntactic/semantic processing: ERPs to written Chinese discourse.

Two event-related brain potential experiments were conducted to investigate the functional interplay between discourse-level referential processing and local syntactic/semantic processing of phrases. We manipulated both the syntactic/semantic coherence of a noun phrase (NP) and the referential ambiguity of the same NP. Incoherence of the NP elicited a P600 effect in both experiments. Referentia...

The Form of Referential Expressions in Discourse

Most instances of real-life language use involve discourses in which several sentences or utterances are coherently linked through the use of repeated references. In this article we distinguish between three main approaches: one that addresses the ‘why’ quest...

A method for automatic and dynamic estimation of discourse genre typology with prosodic features

This paper presents a work-in-progress on the automatic analysis of discourse genre in non-elicited speech. The study is focused on the development of bottom-up methods for automatic validation of discourse typologies found in linguistic descriptions (prosodic, syntactic, pragmatic and/or contextual and situational cues). The linguistic classification examined here opposes five discourse genres...
